Lycanthropic Lore
The werewolf, or lycanthrope, is the physical manifestation of a person's animal instincts and bestial nature. Originating from the spores of the Lupia plant, once commonly found in swamps but now all but eradicated, the werewolf is a beast of the night. Once infected with the disease, now most commonly transmitted through a festering bit or scratch from a werewolf, the victim will transform into a beast during the next full moon.
During the remainder of the month, the werewolf is perfectly safe. Their disease is not transmittable when they are in their regular form, and they are no more hostile than they ordinarily would be. However, on the full moon their animal nature surges forwards, transforming their body into that of a large wolf. During this time, the werewolf should be treated with extreme caution, as they possess increased strength, stamina, and other senses. There is no easy way to kill a werewolf, but if forced into a confrontation with one the best options would be to attack with silver, gold, platinum, or another precious metal, or to use fire.
As the spores, and thus the disease, causes the manifestation of the victim's animal nature, some people are naturally immune. Placid people and those with strong willpower may not contract the disease, even if bitten by a werewolf.
